Fabric pleating is a traditional craft which enables the application of sculptural form, volume and pattern to fabric. It uses cardboard moulds to achieve intricate and precise folds which are then made permanent through the use of steam or heat.
During this 1-day course, you will explore different pleat styles and create your own collection of samples ranging from a simple accordion pleats advancing to more complex herringbone patterns.
We will start with looking at the history of pleating and its various applications (eg Issey Miyake). You will then learn some basic paper folding skills and make your own reusable moulds, before moving on to the pleating itself.
There will be variety of fabrics available for you to use including felt, linen, viscose and silk and plenty of time to try out different moulds and patterns. A selection of more complex moulds will be available for you to use, in addition to those you have made.
At the end of the day, you will leave with an impressive set of samples, a set of re-useable moulds and all the necessary skills and confidence to continue to pleat at home.
All materials, fabric and tools will be provided and you are also more than welcome to bring along any fabric samples of your own you would like to pleat.
Suitable for beginners and anyone interested in dressmaking, millinery, costume making or who just want to take their paper folding skills one step further with new materials.
Tea/Coffee/Refreshments will be provided but please bring lunch with you.
